My very first assignment on Burger King was to develop a social stunt to celebrate BK's 70th birthday. We pitched a ludicrous idea called "Whopper Sprinkles" where all the sesame seeds would turn rainbow colored. Production said it was impossible with only 6 weeks til launch. Legal said it was irresponsible to suggest we could create a food product that people would ingest.... And they were right. "Whopper Sprinkles" was dead on the spot.
During our 2nd meeting we pitched "Flame-Grilled Scented Birthday Candles." Production said it was impossible with only 5 weeks left. Legal said it was irresponsible to pitch a flammable product and suggested people might get poisoned from the wax.... This time I refused to take no for an answer.
I researched candle makers and made my own calls until I found the perfect partner. A boutique fragrance company that could create 100% organic beeswax birthday candles, matching the brand colors and infused with BK's signature flame grilled scent. The would make 500 candles, hand-dipped and individually packaged in sets. Legal said they wouldn't launch anything unless it passed rigorous product testing from an independent lab.
48 hours later I sat in a beautiful studio space with Burger King's leadership, our creative teams and our partners from Joya Studios where we smelled Whoppers and sketched out the first of many custom BK products. When we launched, we sold out in 3 minutes.
